Pari mutuel wagering on horse and greyhound racing has been legal in Arkansas since the mid-1930s. While greyhound racing is no longer offered in Arkansas, the state has proven to be a popular destination for thoroughbred horse racing. Oaklawn plays host to the Arkansas Derby, annually one of the key Kentucky Derby preps. This race has been contested since 1936. Three Arkansas Derby winners have gone on to win the Kentucky Derby – Sunny’s Halo (1983), Smarty Jones (2004) and American Pharoah, who would go on to win the Triple Crown in 2015.
