While many frequent flyers in North America view AMEX’s Centurion Lounges as the gold standard, Capital One is challenging the status quo with its newly established lounges and landing sites at airports.
The first Capital One lounge opened at Dallas Fort-Worth International Airport in November 2021, and six others have followed in five years, with an eighth announced.
Travelers to Denver, Dallas, Washington D.C., New York, and Las Vegas can enjoy Capital One’s hospitality. But how do the lounges shape up to the competition? Is the $395 annual fee for the Venture X card worth it for lounge access? Let’s take a look.
Lounge access is the single biggest reason most people pay a premium credit card fee at all, and Capital One rewrote its rules. We at Locals Insider wanted to know whether the Venture X still makes sense at $395 once you account for what it now costs to bring anyone with you — so we checked every location, every fee, and how it stacks up against Amex Platinum and the Chase Sapphire Reserve.

What Changed on 1 February 2026
Capital One rewrote its lounge access rules on 1 February 2026, and the changes are the single most important thing to understand before you apply for the card. Nothing changed for primary cardholders, who keep unlimited complimentary access to Capital One Lounges, Landings and Priority Pass. Everything changed for the people traveling with them.
Authorized users lost complimentary access. Previously one of the card’s defining features — up to four additional cardholders with full lounge privileges at no extra cost — it now costs $125 per authorized user, per year, and auto-renews unless canceled.
Guests are no longer free. Bringing a companion into a Capital One Lounge or Landing costs $45 per adult and $25 per child aged 2 to 17. Children under 2 remain free.
Priority Pass guests cost extra, separately. Personal Venture X cardholders now pay $35 per guest, per visit, at Priority Pass lounges — and this fee applies even if you hit the $75,000 spending threshold, because that waiver covers only Capital One’s own properties.
The $75,000 escape hatch. Spend $75,000 on the card in a calendar year and you unlock two complimentary guests at Capital One Lounges and one at Landings, for the remainder of that year and all of the following one. Most cardholders will never reach it.
Capital One attributed the changes to crowding, telling cardholders by email that customers were “increasingly encounter[ing] wait times” as lounges grew more popular.

Strategy: How Does it Work? Introducing Venture X & Venture X Business
Though anyone can pay their way into a Capital One lounge for $90, the optimal strategy for frequent flyers is to sign up for the Capital One Venture X card.
Capital One Venture X and Venture X Business customers get complimentary access to all Capital One lounge locations. You also get global access to 1,300+ partner lounges through Priority Pass.
Both cards have an annual fee of $395 and come with the following additional benefits:
- 75,000 Early Spend Bonus: Get 75,000 miles when you spend $4,000 on purchases in your first three months.
- 10,000 Miles Bonus: Receive 10,000 bonus miles every year, beginning on your first anniversary.
- $300 Travel Credit: Get a $300 annual travel credit to use on hotels, flights, vacation rentals, and other items and services through Capital One Travel.
- TSA PreCheck or Global Entry Credit: Up to $120 statement credit toward TSA PreCheck or Global Entry.
The main difference between Venture X Business and the standard Venture X card is that the former has no preset spending limit.
Also, the Venture X Business card lets you issue employee cards and provides access to accounts payable, helping you to manage regular business payments.
One difference worth knowing if you travel with family: Venture X Business cardholders still get two complimentary guests at Priority Pass lounges, where personal Venture X cardholders now pay $35 each.

You’ll encounter both Capital One lounges and landings. Lounges are designed as spacious, full-service airport retreats, typically featuring buffet dining and dedicated areas for working.
Landings provide a more intimate experience, centered around chef-prepared meals, seated dining, and tapas-style offerings.

Capital One announced its eighth location on 8 January 2026: a lounge at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), on the Concourse A mezzanine near gates 21 to 29. At roughly 14,000 square feet it will be the largest in the network. No opening date has been confirmed.

With your Venture X credit card, you’re also eligible for entry to over 1,300 Priority Pass lounges. It’s the largest lounge network in the world, with over 240 in North America alone.
Note that Priority Pass access requires separate enrollment — it isn’t automatic when your card arrives, and it’s the step people most often forget.
What to expect from a Capital One Lounge?
You can expect as much food and drink as you can manage before your flight departs, though at most airports, you can only access the lounge three hours before your departure.
Michelin-starred chef, Jose Andres, is the celebrity behind the tapas concept at Capital One’s landing sites, with craft drinks and cocktails to match.
But in the main lounges, there’s a variety of food and drink options, not limited to Spanish-style cuisine. Each lounge has a buffet with hot and cold items, while food is available to order from menus through QR codes.
We love that there are also specialty food stations at each location, offering something unique. At JFK, for instance, you can load up on authentic, fresh New York bagels thanks to the Ess-a-Bagel concession, while there’s also a stand for Murray’s Cheese for bespoke cheese and wine pairings.
Every lounge has a barista-staffed espresso bar, with beans sourced from regional roasters.
Depending on the lounge you visit, you may also access family rooms and showers, but not every lounge is the same, so double-check before flying to avoid disappointment. Capital One Lounge Reviews: Highly Regarded or Underwhelming?
There’s a lot of love for Capital One lounges among frequent flyers:

The waitlist both reviewers mention is worth understanding before you rely on a lounge. Capital One’s app lets you join a virtual queue before you reach the terminal, and at the busiest locations — Denver in particular — waits have been reported at 45 to 60 minutes at peak times. Join the list when you leave for the airport, not when you arrive.
Our Verdict: How Does it Compare?
For $395 per year, the Capital One Venture X card is far from the most expensive way to gain lounge access while traveling.
Venture X’s two main competitors are the Chase Sapphire Reserve and American Express Platinum Card, which come with annual fees of $795 and $895, respectively.
Specifically regarding lounge access, American Express offers access to a broader range of lounges, including its own Centurion network plus more than 1,550 through its partners, compared to Capital One’s five lounges, two landings and 1,300+ through Priority Pass. But it’s considerably more expensive.
The Chase Sapphire Reserve card lets you access the highly-rated Chase Sapphire Lounges plus Priority Pass Select venues, but again, it’s costlier than the Capital One Venture X card each year.
At the price point, Capital One has undoubtedly done enough in the past five years to rival Chase and American Express. With new lounges in the pipeline at other US airports, we think Capital One’s offering is worth taking seriously.
Bottom line? The comparatively low fee compared to its competitors and the excellent quality of the lounges make Capital One Venture X well worth it if you’re looking for lounge access alongside other travel perks — provided you travel alone. If you regularly fly with a partner or children, do the math on the guest fees first. Two adults and a child on ten trips a year is $1,150 in guest charges on top of the $395.

Capital One, Amex and Chase all tightened guest and authorized-user rules during 2025 and 2026 in response to crowding, and none has signalled a reversal. Expect the network to keep growing — Charlotte is confirmed and more locations are in the pipeline — while the rules around who gets in free keep narrowing.
