Rotterdam: A First-Timer's Guide to the Netherlands' Architecture Capital
Rotterdam is the Dutch city that became, by accident of history, the world's most concentrated showcase of contemporary architecture — the 1940 German Blitz flattened the centre, and the city rebuilt as an experiment, producing the Erasmus Bridge, the Cube Houses, the Markthal, and (May 2025) the Fenix Museum of Migration.
The other major recent opening is the mirrored Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen, the publicly visitable art-storage facility for the Boijmans museum (currently undergoing its own decade-long renovation). Travel safety & inclusivity
Rotterdam is one of the safer larger European cities. Pickpocketing is the only real urban risk, particularly around Rotterdam Centraal station. The standard advice: be aware of bicycle lanes — they are everywhere, and Dutch cyclists do not stop. Solo travel, including for women at evening in central areas, is fine.
The Netherlands was the first country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage (2001), with comprehensive legal protections since.
