There’s a quiet shift happening in how we access the internet when we travel — and it’s not always for the better. In China, you quickly realise you can’t even open international media sites without help. In Dubai, video calls often don’t go through unless you have the right setup, leaving you with basic messaging instead. Even in the UK, parts of the web (like adult content) now come with age verification barriers, while in places like Montenegro, we’ve seen certain YouTube content — including major music releases like Madonna’s new album — simply unavailable without a workaround.
The idea of a truly open internet is slowly fading, replaced by regional restrictions that change from country to country. That’s where VPN services like NordVPN come in. At Locals Insider, we rely on it across phones and laptops — not just for privacy, but because it restores access to the internet as it should be: open, fast, and usable almost anywhere.
