From Gucci Osteria in Ginza to Louis Vuitton’s Le Café V in Osaka, ten fashion brand cafés and design spaces in Japan
  • Beyond Shopping: 10 Fashion Brand Cafés, Restaurants and Design Spaces to Visit in Japan Tokyo and Osaka have always understood fashion as more than clothing. Here, a boutique can become a gallery, a café can become a cultural meeting point, and a restaurant can become part of a fashion house’s identity. From Michelin-starred dining inside Gucci Ginza to quiet coffee moments at Café Kitsuné in Aoyama, Japan offers some of the most interesting examples of fashion brands creating places people actually want to visit. Gucci Osteria Tokyo — Tokyo, Japan A Michelin-starred restaurant hidden inside Gucci Ginza Gucci was founded in Florence in 1921 by Guccio Gucci, originally creating luxury luggage and leather goods inspired by travel. Today, the Italian fashion house continues to combine fashion, art and hospitality through projects around the world. Following the success of Gucci Osteria in Florence, Gucci opened its Tokyo restaurant in 2021 inside the Gucci Ginza flagship store. The restaurant was created together with chef Massimo Bottura, the founder of the three-Michelin-starred Osteria Francescana in Modena. The menu combines Italian traditions with Japanese ingredients, creating dishes that reflect both cultures. The elegant interior mixes Gucci’s colourful aesthetic with Japanese attention to detail, making it feel more like a private dining room than a typical restaurant. Address: Gucci Ginza, 6-10-1 Ginza, Chuo City, Tokyo Opened: 2021 Created by: Gucci and chef Massimo Bottura What they offer: Seasonal Italian tasting menus, wine pairing and fine dining Opening hours: Lunch and dinner service; reservations recommended Why visit: A rare place where Italian fashion heritage meets Japanese culinary precision. Louis Vuitton Le Café V — Osaka, Japan A café above one of Japan’s most impressive fashion buildings Louis Vuitton opened Maison Osaka Midosuji in 2020, creating one of its most ambitious flagships in Asia. Designed by Japanese architect Jun Aoki, the building takes inspiration from traditional Japanese sailing ships and reflects the connection between Louis Vuitton’s history of travel and Japan’s architectural traditions. At the top of the building is Le Café V, a stylish café offering coffee, desserts, cocktails and light dishes with views over Osaka. The café is part of a wider Louis Vuitton experience that combines fashion, architecture, art and dining. Address: Louis Vuitton Maison Osaka Midosuji, 2-8-16 Shinsaibashi-suji, Chuo Ward, Osaka Opened: 2020 Created by: Louis Vuitton; architecture by Jun Aoki What they offer: Coffee, tea, desserts, cocktails and seasonal dishes Opening hours: Varies; follows Maison Osaka schedule Why visit: One of the best examples of a fashion store becoming an architectural destination. Café Kitsuné Aoyama — Tokyo, Japan A fashion brand café that became a local favourite Maison Kitsuné was founded in Paris in 2002 by Gildas Loaëc and Masaya Kuroki, combining French fashion, Japanese influences and an independent music label. The brand opened Café Kitsuné Aoyama in 2013, becoming one of the first fashion cafés to create a genuine community around the brand. Located in Tokyo’s design-focused Aoyama district, the café combines Parisian café culture with Japanese minimalism. The menu includes espresso, matcha drinks, pastries and seasonal desserts. The interior reflects Maison Kitsuné’s fashion philosophy: simple, elegant and understated. Address: 3-17-1 Minami-Aoyama, Minato City, Tokyo Opened: 2013 Created by: Maison Kitsuné founders Gildas Loaëc and Masaya Kuroki What they offer: Coffee, matcha drinks, pastries and desserts Opening hours: Usually open daily from morning until evening Why visit: A rare fashion café that feels like a real neighbourhood spot rather than a marketing project. Dover Street Market Ginza — Tokyo, Japan A fashion concept store that feels like an art gallery Created by Comme des Garçons founder Rei Kawakubo and Adrian Joffe, Dover Street Market Ginza opened in 2012 as a Japanese version of the original London concept store. More than a shop, it combines fashion, art, books, installations and unexpected collaborations across several floors. Visitors can discover Comme des Garçons alongside designers such as Prada, Balenciaga, Sacai and emerging Japanese labels. The constantly changing displays make every visit different. Address: 6-9-5 Ginza, Chuo City, Tokyo Opened: 2012 Created by: Rei Kawakubo and Adrian Joffe What they offer: Fashion, books, art installations and designer collaborations Opening hours: Usually 11:00–20:00 Why visit: One of Tokyo’s best places to understand how fashion, art and retail are merging. Ralph’s Coffee — Tokyo, Japan An American fashion lifestyle inside a Tokyo café Ralph Lauren has always sold an entire world rather than just clothing. The American designer built his brand around country houses, classic cars, polo clubs and timeless style. Ralph’s Coffee brought that lifestyle into café spaces around the world, including Tokyo. The cafés use Ralph Lauren’s signature atmosphere: dark wood, vintage details and relaxed American elegance. Visitors can enjoy coffee, pastries and light snacks while surrounded by the brand’s visual identity. Address: Ralph Lauren locations vary in Tokyo Opened in Japan: 2016 Created by: Ralph Lauren What they offer: Coffee, espresso drinks, pastries and snacks Opening hours: Depends on location Why visit: A relaxed way to experience one of fashion’s most recognisable lifestyles. Issey Miyake Reality Lab — Tokyo, Japan Where fashion becomes design and architecture Japanese designer Issey Miyake, who founded his fashion house in 1970, changed the way the world viewed clothing by combining technology, craftsmanship and art. His Tokyo spaces are less about traditional shopping and more about exploring ideas around design, materials and innovation. The brand’s Reality Lab projects and stores often feel closer to galleries, with exhibitions and installations showing the creative process behind Japanese fashion. Address: Tokyo locations vary Created by: Issey Miyake What they offer: Fashion exhibitions, design objects and experimental retail spaces Opening hours: Depends on location Why visit: A glimpse into the creative thinking behind one of Japan’s most influential designers. Maison Margiela Tokyo — Tokyo, Japan A minimalist fashion world in the city Founded in Paris in 1988 by Belgian designer Martin Margiela, Maison Margiela became famous for conceptual fashion, unusual materials and a focus on ideas rather than trends. Japan has always been one of the brand’s most important markets, with Tokyo stores reflecting the label’s minimalist and artistic approach. The spaces combine fashion, fragrance, art and design, creating an experience closer to a gallery than a traditional boutique. Address: Maison Margiela Tokyo locations vary Created by: Maison Margiela What they offer: Fashion, accessories, fragrance and design installations Opening hours: Depends on location Why visit: A quieter, more intellectual side of luxury fashion in Tokyo. Prada Tokyo — Tokyo, Japan A futuristic fashion landmark in Aoyama Prada’s Tokyo store is one of the city’s most recognisable fashion buildings. Designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron and opened in 2003, the glass-and-steel structure in Aoyama looks more like a contemporary art museum than a boutique. Inside, visitors find Prada collections alongside exhibitions and architectural details that make the building itself the attraction. Address: 5-2-6 Minami-Aoyama, Minato City, Tokyo Opened: 2003 Designed by: Herzog & de Meuron What they offer: Fashion collections, accessories and exhibitions Opening hours: Usually 11:00–20:00 Why visit: One of Tokyo’s most iconic examples of fashion and architecture becoming one. Fendi Café Tokyo — Tokyo, Japan A Roman fashion house creating a temporary experience Italian fashion house Fendi, founded in Rome in 1925, has created temporary café experiences in Japan connected with collections, store openings and special events. These cafés combine Fendi’s Roman heritage with Japanese attention to detail, offering limited-edition drinks, desserts and highly designed interiors. Like many Japanese fashion experiences, the attraction is not only the product but the atmosphere and exclusivity. Location: Tokyo (temporary concepts) Created by: Fendi What they offer: Coffee, desserts and limited-edition experiences Opening hours: Depends on each event Why visit: A good example of how luxury brands use Japan as a place to experiment with new ideas.
