UK Online Sports Betting Hub: Free Bets, Top Bookmakers & Where to Bet

After the National Lottery, betting is Britain’s favourite flutter — and football is at its heart. There are around 5,600 betting shops on UK high streets, but most betting now happens on a phone. We guide you to the licensed bookmakers worth using, explain the offers in plain English, and lean on feedback from locals we trust. You must be 18+ to bet for real money.

A nation of football bettors

Betting here is woven into matchday: an accumulator with friends, a price on the first goalscorer, or a live bet as the game swings. Live football betting is the most popular in-play market in the country. It’s entertainment first — a few pounds to make the ninety minutes matter more — and that’s exactly how it should stay.

Free bets, decoded

“Free” bets are a hook, not free money, and the value lives in the small print.

With most welcome offers the stake is not returned. Bet a £10 free bet at even money and win, and you keep the £10 profit — not £20. Read the minimum odds, the wagering and the expiry before you claim.

A quick word on tax

As with casino play, you pay no tax on betting winnings in the UK — win £20 on a Saturday accumulator or £20,000 on an outright, it’s all yours. The duty sits with the bookmaker, not the punter, and has done since betting tax on players was abolished in 2001.

Frequently asked questions

Is online betting legal in the UK?

Yes — with a UK Gambling Commission–licensed bookmaker. We only list UKGC-licensed books and never cover offshore or non-GamStop sites.

Do I pay tax on betting winnings?

No. Betting winnings are tax-free for players in the UK and have been since 2001. The tax is paid by the bookmaker, not by you.

What is the minimum age to bet?

18. You must be 18 or over to bet for real money in the UK, in a shop or online.

How do free bets actually work?

With most offers the stake is not returned: a winning £10 free bet at even money pays £10 profit, not £20. Always check the minimum odds, any wagering and the time limit before you opt in.

What changed for betting offers in 2026?

From 19 January 2026 a sports promotion can no longer push you into casino play to unlock it, and any bonus wagering is capped at 10x the bonus.
