Where to go in April: Travel Highlights Around the World

Late March into early April sees spring break across the USA, with many families and young adults heading on vacation. This week off school means it’s also a great month for heading abroad. Europe is warming up and getting ready for summer, whilst the spring blossoms are still in bloom across Japan and South Korea. In this article, we’ll show you where to travel in April and highlight some of the best spring break destinations, both at home and abroad.

Turkey

April sees the beginning of the sailing season on Turkey’s Mediterranean Coast, with temperatures in Fethiye and Marmaris averaging around 20°C (68°F). Prices are lower and beaches quieter at this time of year, though it can still be chilly at night. These mild temperatures are perfect for exploring Istanbul, the legendary ruins of Ephesus and the fairy-tale landscapes of Cappadocia too, perhaps on an escorted group tour. Here is our Locals Insider’s guide to Alanya.

South Korea

Just like Japan, neighboring South Korea is still in the grip of cherry blossom season for at least the first half of April. It is best in Busan; the seashore town is not crowded with tourists, and the beach is not packed; you can enjoy hiking trails and views. Seoul and its clubs, street barbeque grills, and fashion are always nice and a bit too cold, but then again, there are fewer crowds.

We recommend Four Seasons Seoul, which has one of the best onsen spas and treatments. They also have a secret underground glamorous cocktail bar, Charles H. (ask the receptionist). Parks in Seoul and other large cities are transformed by the pink hues of the cherry trees and locals and travelers come together to celebrate the arrival of spring. The Yeouido Spring Flower Festival celebrates this color alongside food stalls and vibrant performances. Further south, Jeju Island offers quiet hiking trails and incredible views of Mount Hallasan.

Arizona, USA

If you’re wondering where to go for spring break, the sun belt state of Arizona is a great option to think about. Sun-baked Arizona is almost too hot to visit during the blistering summer months, but in spring, things are more manageable. Temperatures in April range from 15°C to 28°C (59°F to 82°F), perfect for hiking along the rim of Grand Canyon or taking in the iconic rock formations of Sedona. The state’s iconic saguaro cacti are surrounded by wildflowers, offering great photo opportunities and adding a dash of color to your exploration.

For many, spring break means party time, and Phoenix has plenty to offer for those travelers looking to enjoy themselves. There are plenty of late night and rooftop bars, with pounding DJ sets and chic cocktail bars ensuring there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Malaysia

If you’re wondering where to go in April, then Malaysia is a great option to consider. If you’re planning to explore this Asian country then don’t leave it much later; April offers the last realistic month to visit before the rainy season arrives. It’s hotting up, with temperatures of around 28°C to 32°C (82°F to 90°F) across the country. These conditions are perfect for a beach break in Langkawi or Penang, while the cooler weather and lush tea plantations of the Cameron Highlands are also an attractive option. Wildlife lovers can head to the remote island of Borneo to meet gentle giants at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Center.

Cuba

Although diplomatic relations between Cuba and the USA are tetchy, the Caribbean island does offer the perfect conditions and vibe to be one of the best spring break destinations. April is coming towards the end of the dry season, promising warm and sunny days with average temperatures of around 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F). These are ideal conditions for driving classic cars around Havana, relaxing on the beaches of Varadero or sipping on some of the best local (and incredibly cheap) rum. The peak months of December to March have passed, meaning lower prices and fewer crowds, which help to make April one of the best months to visit.

Greece

April is a great month to visit Greece. Tourism is one of the most important industries in this European country, and the summer months from June to August can be so busy that it borders on unpleasant, not to mention expensive. On the contrary, April offers warm temperatures of 15°C to 20°C (59°F to 68°F) and way fewer crowds, making it a great option for anyone wondering where to go on vacation in April. Whether you want to explore the ancient ruins of the mainland, like Delphi and the Athens Acropolis, or island hop around Santorini and Mykonos, you’ll find April is one of the best months of the year to visit.

For some summer hotspots like Greece and Turkey, April offers a great month to visit for those on a budget and those looking to beat the crowds. The spring flowers of Asia are still in bloom and scintillatingly hot parts of the USA are far more bearable for both boozers and hikers, perfect for spring breakers.
