Open since 2005 and the creation of Danish firm Topas Travel, Topas Ecolodge features Scandi design in the heart of Hoang Lien National Park, 45 minutes outside of Sapa in Northern Vietnam. While not on the typical tourist trail, Topas is worth diverting for.

There are 50 artfully designed minimalist mountain bungalows and villas, some with garden or mountain views, and others with a private pool. While the Premium Executive Bungalow is stunning, the Pool Villas are worth splurging on. At the top of the hill with the best views, a private swimming spot, and a butler for your stay, these villas start at $540 per night.

The company’s eco principles are evident in the property’s design. Eco-friendly saltwater infinity pools, a nearby wetland for wastewater treatment, and a unique eco-token recycling scheme help Topas live out its sustainable ethos.

There are five dining options on site, but Restaurant 360-Degrees is the pick of the bunch. The views of the surrounding Hoang Lien National Park will keep you occupied throughout your meal, but the locally sourced steak is the main reason to eat here. The Bo Ne Sizzling Beef is the signature dish, with prices ranging from $10 to $40 for main meals. A set menu is also offered at 360, starting at $20 per head.

The local signature dishes celebrate the fiery flavors of Northern Vietnam, including Phở, Hanoi’s best-loved creation. Simmered for eight hours with beef, pork, or fish, this culinary delight is the best seller at Green Chilli, with dishes going for around 350,000 VND ($13-$14).

The cloud pool here is a major highlight, a three-level infinity pool with sweeping panoramic views across Mai Chau. You can also reserve treatments at the on-site Orchid Spa.

We highly recommend the 90-minute Avana Signature Soothing Treatment, which uses warm Vietnamese herbal packs to revitalize your mind, body, and soul after a long journey on North Vietnam’s rugged roads. Treatments cost 2,600,000 VND ($100 for 1.5 hours).
