The Complete Guide to Bangkok

An Honest Guide to Bangkok from a Film Photographer: Art Shops, Markets, Breakfast Coffee Spots, Parks and more.

This time, we’re exploring the city with Anya Verkhoumova — a film photographer and, in her previous life, a dermatologist. At some point, Anya decided to change everything: together with her husband and their dog, she left St. Petersburg for Thailand. Today she lives in Bangkok, creates visual stories for people and brands, and is genuinely in love with this city.

I’ve been living in Bangkok for two years now, and I truly believe it’s one of the best cities in the world. I’ve rarely seen a place with this much color and character. My advice: walk as much as you can and just look, look, look — be greedy for beauty! This city will absolutely surprise you. It was hard to narrow it down to just a few spots, but I tried to choose the ones that will make your time here feel truly special.

If you’re into stacked sandwiches and cinnamon rolls, this is your spot. My personal go-to: the Tender Tuna and the Turkish Eggs. For a drink, order the Forever Young.

A great pick for build-your-own-breakfast fans. It’s an expanding mini-chain, and each location has its own slightly different menu. Just type the name into Google Maps and head to the nearest one.

They brew some of the richest, fullest-bodied coffee in the city — and yes, you can pet a dachshund here. Mostly locals know about this place, which tells you everything you need to know. Check their Instagram: sometimes they post a schedule of when the pups are around. Total sweethearts.

Grabbing a coffee with a view over Bangkok — in my book, that’s the perfect combo. From this café you get a great perspective on the city, including the iconic MahaNakhon.

A paradise for flower lovers — you’ll find blooms in every color and variety. Prices might surprise you, though. When you need a break, relax with an iced tea at the Floral Café at Napasorn.

Chinatown

One of my favorite neighborhoods in Bangkok. Beyond the main street, Yaowarat, make sure to wander the alleys of Talat Noi and Song Wat Road — this is where the real creative energy thrives. In Talat Noi, you can see how locals live and even check out a parts market (trust me, you’ll love it!). Also in the area are the Warehouse 30 space and the ATT19 gallery.

Benchakitti Park

A beloved urban park: perfect for jogging, strolling, or picnicking. Many locals compare it to Central Park. On weekends, you might catch performances in the amphitheater.

I recommend visiting the rooftop to enjoy the city from above, especially if you’re not into noisy bars and just want a quiet sunset. Beautiful views and usually very few people.

Jim Thompson House & Art Space

Jim Thompson House Museum
Пространство Джима Томпсона

The man who played a key role in developing Thailand’s silk industry. Definitely take a guided tour. After the museum, stop by the nearby art space — just a minute’s walk. You can go up to the rooftop; a bar opens at 5 PM.

Exhibitions are held occasionally (museum tickets grant access). The shop has unique souvenirs — I recommend a silk scarf, an eyeglass case, and mulberry jam.

Where to Shop

Vintage Store Chatuchak

The largest vintage shopping center in Bangkok. Antiques, branded items, local designers — you can easily spend half a day here. If you need a break, there are a few cafés inside. Don’t confuse it with the weekend market!

Siam Square One

Here you’ll find many unique Thai brands, and local KFC pick-up spots are a fun surprise. Alongside Thai labels, you’ll also spot familiar brands like Adidas. My favorite boutique is called “niko and….”.

Central Embassy

I love this complex. It’s relatively quiet, shopping is stylish and comfortable. Upstairs, you’ll find Open House with plenty of restaurants, a large bookstore, and a coworking space. Plus, balconies offering great city views.

A new mall connected by SkyWalk to EmQuartier (don’t miss the Gentle Monster eyewear store) and Emporium. In Emporium, you can also enjoy a delicious ramen at Ippudo Ramen.

If you’ve been shooting film during your Bangkok trip, make sure to stop by before you leave. Get your rolls developed and treat yourself to a really good coffee. I even have a little tradition: I always develop my film in the same city where I shot it. Just a heads-up — they’re closed on Wednesdays.
