Caribbean named top wedding location by British public as voters shun UK ceremonies

The British public are shunning UK weddings in favor of ideally attending destination weddings abroad, according to new research from Locals Insider, with the Caribbean proving to be the top location for attending a ceremony.

In a survey of 2,000 UK adults, a significant 72.1% of voters would prefer to attend a wedding abroad, as the trend in destination ceremonies continues to trend upwards, with just 7.6% preferring a wedding in the UK. 20.3% would be happy with attending a wedding in either.

As for the British public’s favorite wedding destination, it’s the Caribbean that sits top of the pile, with 17.75% of voters opting for attending a service amid the region’s picturesque sandy beaches and sweltering hot temperatures.

When it comes to romantic destinations around the globe, it can be hard to better Italy and so it’s of little surprise to see the European nation sitting second in the voting, narrowly missing out on top spot on 17%.

Greece and its array of idyllic islands has long been a favourite for holidaymakers, with the nation sitting third in the list of favorite locations to attend a wedding on 12.35%. France (7.2%) and Spain (4.75%), meanwhile, round off the top five, with the likes of the USA, Portugal, South-East Asia and Australia also among the UK public’s considerations.

When it comes to the nation’s spending habits for overseas weddings, 20.77% of voters say they would be prepared to spend between £750-£1,000 if they were to attend a wedding abroad, with 19% opting for the £500-£750 bracket and another 19% choosing between £1,000-£1,500. Some 18.04% would be happy to spend upwards of £1,500, with 16.26% saying they would only spend between £250-£500.

Meanwhile, respondents were also asked where they would ideally choose to spend their honeymoon, with the Caribbean again leading the way with 25.35% of votes. Italy (12.3%) and Greece (10%) again finished in second and third place respectively, while South-East Asia ranked fourth on 9.2% with France on 6.5%

Spokesperson for Locals Insider, Martin Danemaq, said: “Destination weddings abroad for UK residents have massively been on the up in recent years and it’s clear that the trend doesn’t look like stopping anytime soon, according to results from our new survey.

“When it comes to attending weddings, just 7.6% of voters would prefer to attend a wedding in the UK, with a whopping 72.1% of the British public opting to open their wallets in preference of attending a ceremony away from UK shores.

“The Caribbean leads the way when it comes to the British public’s favorite destination to attend a wedding with 17.75% of the vote, narrowly beating off competition from Italy (17%) by the smallest of margins.

“Elsewhere, Greece, France, Spain, USA and Portugal were just some of the alternatives preferred by our voters, reflecting the nation’s desire to attend more and more weddings abroad – and away from an often damp and gloomy UK!”
