Mauritius had been on my radar for years. While Seychelles gets all the buzz, it often feels overcrowded and overhyped. Mauritius, on the other hand, sits just a few hours further and offers a bigger island, more diverse nature, and plenty of peace and quiet—if you know where to look.
I wanted silence, Ayurvedic spa treatments, clean ocean air, and deep, undisturbed sleep. Most travel mags pointed to the north near Port Louis and Grand Baie, but that wasn’t my vibe. Too built up, too busy. So I flipped the map and looked south—and that’s where I found Shanti Maurice Resort & Spa. It’s nestled near the iconic Le Morne Brabant, a UNESCO-listed volcanic mountain, and close to the Seven Colored Earths of Chamarel and the historic Bois Chéri Tea Estate. It felt like the perfect blend of untouched nature, culture, and high-end comfort.
What followed was a personal, restorative escape. And while I stayed at Shanti Maurice, I also scouted a few other incredible resorts across the island for next time. Here’s my curated list of the best places to stay in Mauritius based on trusted guest reviews, spa quality, food, location, and, most importantly—how good the sleep was.

Shanti Maurice Resort & Spa

- Rooms from $466 (Junior Suite Oceanview)
- Book now
Nestled in St Felix on the island’s south coast (the most silent area on the island, not crowded), Shanti Maurice Resort sits on a pristine coral cove surrounded by 36 acres of tropical gardens. Open since 2006, Shanti is part of the Beachcomber Hotels portfolio, known for excellence and attention to detail, featuring 61 accommodations ranging from junior suites to the luxe Shanti Villa.
The Shanti Villa is the place for no-expense-spared luxury on the Mauritian south coast. It has three bedrooms, a private pool, an enclosed courtyard, butler service, and two dining pavilions for private culinary experiences. Prices start at around $2,500 per night, depending on the season.
We visited in the off-season (late May into June), which turned out to be a perfect decision. The resort was quiet, nearly empty, and at times it felt like we had the entire beach to ourselves. The property was preparing for a renovation—which it needed—but the villas were still very spacious and comfortable. The highlight? The outdoor rain shower, tucked into a private garden, surrounded by tropical greenery and total silence.

Shanti Maurice has five dining options, with Indian, Asian, sushi, and Mauritian menus regularly updated and changed to reflect seasonal produce.
Food-wise, I went in expecting a heavy focus on seafood and local fish, but found the menus leaned more toward Indian and Asian cuisine—lots of rice, curries, and breads. It wasn’t quite my style, but I can see others loving it. For seafood lovers like me, I’d recommend double-checking the menus or exploring local options nearby.
Head chef Deepak Das has continued the resort’s ‘Aquacasia’ philosophy (authentic, wholesome, seafood dishes from the isles of Mauritius, Madagascar, Comoros, and others), perfectly exemplified by the à la carte menu at the on-site Stars Restaurant.
As for activities, Shanti Maurice residents can access free golf at the nearby Avalon Golf Estate, which includes a golf cart, club hire, and balls. Water-based activities include snorkelling, windsurfing, wakeboarding, and kitesurfing. Ethical swimming with dolphins adventures are also bookable at Shanti Maurice, going for 37,500 MUR ($825) for a full day on and in the water.
The on-site spa was a major draw for us. Tucked away in a secluded garden filled with lily ponds and koi fish, it had a calming, jungle-like vibe. I tried several treatments, and while the atmosphere was spot on, the Ayurvedic options were just okay—I was hoping for something a bit more traditional. There’s a petite sauna (fits three people max), a serene outdoor swimming pool, and enough space to fully unwind.

Anantara Iko Mauritius Resort & Villas
- Rooms from $348 per night (Deluxe Garden Room)
- Book now

Anantara’s Iko Resort was the group’s first venture in Mauritius when it opened in 2019. It’s located in the island’s south-east corner, occupying a gorgeous stretch of Le Chaland Beach, just 15 minutes from the country’s international airport.
Accommodation options include 164 guest rooms and suites and eight private villas with pools. Private access to the beach and water-based activities in the adjacent Blue Bay Marine Park are a big draw for guests.
We recommend the villas, influenced by Mauritian colonial design and made from local materials like volcanic stone and driftwood. Each villa is surrounded by tropical gardens and has a private pool. Though rates change with the seasons, villas range from $960 to $1,500 per night.

In-resort restaurants include Horizon, Sea.Fire.Salt, Zafran, and Bon Manzer. Horizon is the perfect place to try fish vindaye, a Creole marinated fish dish that’s a staple of Mauritian cuisine. Sea.Fire.Salt is one of the top-rated seafood restaurants on the island, with catch-of-the-day fish uniquely seared on Himalayan salt slabs, and grilled lobster always available.
We were also impressed with the offer of lychee wines from the resort’s Wine Cellar 1884, ranging from $20 to $40 per bottle. An in-house sommelier can guide you on your selection, based on your choice of evening meal.
As at Anantara resorts in other parts of the world, Spice Spoons cookery classes are offered to all guests. A Hospitality Awards winner, the classes include a trip to a local market to buy fresh produce and learn traditional Creole cooking techniques ($380 a person).

The Oberoi Beach Resort, Mauritius
- Rooms from $544 per night (Luxury Pavilion with Garden View)
- Book now

Open since 2001, The Oberoi is a long-standing Mauritian resort on a former French colonial site on the island’s northwest coast. The coast here is known as Turtle Bay, close to Pointe and Balaclava and has a private 600-meter sandy beach.
Accommodations here are 71 luxurious thatched-roof pavilions and villas, with garden-view, ocean-view, and royal and presidential villas all offered.
If money really isn’t an issue, the expansive three-bedroom Royal Ocean View Villa, sprawled across 225 square metres, is hard to beat in the whole of Mauritius, with a sunken marble bath, private terrace, and heated pool. Prices start from around $3,100 per night.
The Oberoi’s main thatched restaurant celebrates local Mauritian cuisine, blending Creole and Indian dishes on most days. However, the Gunpowder Room is a must on at least one night of your vacation, within an 18th-century French colonial-era gun room, preserved to perfection.
Even if you don’t stay at the Oberoi, the hotel accepts reservations for the Gunpowder Room, so it’s well worth dining here, no matter where you stay on the island. A three-course meal will set you back around $85.

“The Most Beautiful Honeymoon Experience: My husband and I had the most magical experience here at The Oberoi in Mauritius. Shangri-La Le Touessrok, Mauritius
- Rooms from $621 per night (Hibiscus Ocean View Room)
- Book now

This resort has been welcoming guests to Mauritius since 1978 as an independent hotel, but it was taken over by the Shangri-La Group in 2015, receiving a decade-long renovation and restoration that was finally completed in 2024.
One of the main reasons to stay here is access to the resort’s private island, Îlot Mangénie, a ten-minute boat ride from the resort. You can relax in complete tranquillity, with access to dining and refreshments during your time in the Indian Ocean.

Accommodations include Coral Rooms, Hibiscus Suites, and Frangipani Rooms. The latter is ideal for those seeking peace, as it’s within the adults-only section of the resort. Be mindful that a minimum three-night stay applies.
Dining options are La Bazar, Kushi, Safran, and Coco’s. Kushi has a well-earned reputation as one of the best Japanese restaurants on the island, with yakiniku grills at every table and fresh sushi and fish options that change with the seasons.

The Shangri-La is also home to one of Mauritius’ best spas, with signature treatments, chi journeys, scrubs, and ayurvedic treatments offered year-round. You can also participate in daily yoga classes. Sunrise Yoga is a wonderful way to kickstart your day – guided sessions start at 5,500 MUR ($120).

“A Special Place with a Really Personal Touch: We have just returned from the most wonderful 10-day stay at Shangri La Le Touessrok, and it is hard to capture just how special this place is.
