If you are looking to combine a vacation with a little bit of gambling action, in all honesty Alabama isn’t going to be your best bet. While there are some forms of gambling that are accessible in the state, the fact of the matter is they are few and far between and extremely limited in scope.
Sports betting is 100% illegal. There are a few tribal casinos in operation but these sites only offer electronic bingo games. A commercial casino provides access to historic horse racing machines. There is no access to retail or online sports betting.
Online casino gambling is limited to social and sweepstakes casinos, through which you can’t directly wager or win real money. Betting on horse racing is legal, but there’s no live racing operating in the state. You can wager via simulcasting and online via advance deposit wagering on tracks in other states and other countries.
One advantage to a gambling vacation in Alabama is that the legal age to gamble in the state is just 19 years of age. In fact, in some Alabama counties, the legal gambling age is as low as 18.

Alabama does offer three tribal casinos and one commercial casino. However, these sites aren’t really casinos in the true sense of the word.
Wind Creek Atmore, Wind Creek Montgomery and Wind Creek Wetumpka are the tribal casinos. Each site is operated by the Poarch Band of Creek Indians. However, the gambling action at these tribal gaming sites is limited to the offering of high-stakes bingo machines. Even at that limited offering, the Alabama state government has made failed attempts in court to shut down these tribal casinos.

Once a thriving greyhound racetrack, VictoryLand is a site with a checkered past. In 2003, it became the first Alabama casino offering electronic bingo games. However, in 2010, the state closed it down, citing VictoryLand as an illegal gambling operation. It reopened in 2012 and was shuttered again in 2013. Once more, VictoryLand reopened in 2016.
Today, the site operates offering historic horse racing machines, which have been ruled legal in the state, as well as simulcast wagering on greyhound and horse racing action from tracks like Saratoga, Churchill Downs, Belmont, Yonkers and Gulfstream.
Alabama Horse Racing
Pari-mutuel wagering on horse racing is legal in the state of Alabama. However, there is no live racing in Alabama. Wagering on simulcast racing is provided by Victoryland Casino in Shorter.
The only other option available to visitors to the state is advance deposit wagering on racing elsewhere in the USA and the world.
Alabama Online Sports Betting
Sports betting, either retail, online, or via a mobile app, is not legal in the state. Attempts to get an online sports betting bill passed by the state government failed in both 2023 and 2024.
The latest failed attempt in 2024 aimed to legalize online sports betting, create a gambling commission and state lottery system, and would’ve allowed up to seven land-based casinos to open.
Any attempt to legalize new forms of gambling in the state would ultimately need to be approved via a mandate from a state-wide referendum on the matter.
Alabama Online Casinos
Online casino gambling is also against the law in Alabama.
Currently, the only option for online casino gambling in Alabama are social casinos like Hello Millions, WOW Vegas and Real Prize Casinos. These online sites offer slot machines, table games and in some cases a live dealer studio.
However, at Alabama social casinos you aren’t directly betting or winning any real money. You play with Gold Coins for fun and enjoyment, or via Sweepstakes Coins, through which prize winnings earned can be exchanged for gift cards and even sums of cash.
