Stay in Cairo

Beyond the Pyramids: Where to Eat, Drink, and Stay in Cairo

In Cairo, a century-old café in downtown might be just blocks away from a sleek rooftop bar overlooking the Nile that serves craft cocktails. Here in Zamalek, contemporary art galleries open in elegant villas, which provide a unique and sophisticated setting for these art spaces. In Old Cairo, boutique hotels are tucked away in narrow alleys where traditional craftsmen work. Downtown’s heritage buildings house vintage bars that have been gathering places for locals for decades.

Our selection is a mix of places that locals frequent and an outsider’s perspective, with comments from travelers who rate them based on their experiences. Sometimes, a tourist from London or Paris will notice what Cairenes take for granted: the atmosphere, the warmth of the service, and the certain energy that makes a place worth returning to.

From restaurants reimagining traditional Egyptian cuisine to rooftop bars with panoramic views of the Nile, we’ve gathered places that are actually worth visiting in 2026.

Where to Stay in Cairo: Zamalek, Downtown, or Old City?

Before exploring the list of restaurants and bars, it’s important to understand Cairo’s geography. The city is sprawling, and traffic can be unpredictable, especially when crossing the Nile bridges during rush hour. You won’t be able to get everywhere on foot, so choose your base wisely.

If you’re visiting for the first time and want the classic Cairo experience with easy access to museums and Khan el-Khalili, choose Downtown. If you’re looking for a quieter, more residential atmosphere with tree-lined streets and proximity to galleries and cafés, Zamalek is the place for you. For a truly immersive heritage experience in the heart of Islamic Cairo, consider Old Cairo.
