Helsinki, Finland may not have the marquee attractions like Paris or London, but it’s a delightful European capital that has a lot to offer in its own right. A visit to the Nordic region should definitely include a stop in the city where you can take advantage of all its highlights in just a few days.

Michelin starred and recommended restaurants abound in Helsinki! French bistro Bardot is particularly delicious. Try the lemon shellfish risotto and tarte tatin or opt for the daily menu, if you’re particularly hungry.
Kappeli

Kappeli restaurant, which is reminiscent of Tavern on the Green in New York City and located in the aforementioned Esplanadi park, may not have made the Michelin Guide, but is widely considered to serve the best salmon soup in town by locals. Kiasma
Address: Mannerheiminaukio 2
The Kiasma Finnish National Gallery is a small but mighty contemporary art museum located in the heart of Helsinki. Its cutting-edge, thought-provoking and emotion-evoking exhibitions are worth the visit alone, but so is the building itself, featuring clean lines and curves courtesy of architect Steven Holl, who was inspired by Finnish natural light.
Temppeliakio Church
Address: Lutherinkatu 3
Speaking of architecture, the Temppeliakio Church is not to be missed under any circumstances. Workers drilled down into the rock to create a church within the rock walls and then topped it with a huge copper wire ceiling. Also known as Rock Church, it features two floors, an ornate organ, and excellent acoustics, perfect for special events such as Candlelight Concerts.
Porvoo
A 40-minute drive from Helsinki lies Porvoo, a quiet enclave featuring cobblestoned streets, cute stores, and quaint restaurants. It’s also home to Robert Paulig Roastery, the oldest small coffee roaster in Finland, and to picturesque red-ochre painted waterfront warehouses.
Make sure to try Porvoo’s famous Runeberg’s Torte (named after a famous Finnish poet) at a local café, as it is only served once a year on Feb. 5 – said poet’s birthday- outside of town!
