If you’re in Taiwan for a week or so and have explored Taipei enough, head over to Guguan. This mountain region is known for its natural hot springs and amazing hiking trails where you might even run into some monkeys. The small village itself is pretty simple, with public hot springs and great authentic food. Here, there are just two places to stay: a luxury resort and spa (mostly for international travelers) and budget-friendly spots for locals.
Here is our picture review of HOSHINOYA Guguan, one of the top luxury resorts in Taiwan, the first from the Japanese chain resort of this kind opening in Taiwan in 2020. This eco resort’s design and vibe take inspiration from traditional Japanese ryokan style, but with a clean, minimalistic twist using natural materials. The great thing that it’s all about connecting with nature, with huge windows flooding the rooms with light and incredible views—though it felt strange that these windows couldn’t be opened, as it limits the feeling of being surrounded by nature.
Each room comes with its own private hot spring tub on the terrace, which we loved, as well as traditional attire like kimonos and wooden slippers that add to the experience, even if the shoes were a bit heavy and slippery. The white pajamas provided were a nice touch for relaxing inside the resort.
However, while the resort’s design, silence, and onsen facilities are excellent, we did run into a few issues. We found that booking breakfast and dinner in advance was necessary, which was a bit inconvenient, and communication with the staff was lacking—we had to reach out multiple times to get what we needed. The rigidity of these processes meant the stay didn’t feel as relaxing as it should have. We also noted that there were no yoga or similar activities offered, which felt like a missed opportunity in a place focused on wellness.
Overall, HOSHINOYA Guguan has great potential, but the service and strict processes could use some improvement to match the luxury experience it aims to provide. The surrounding nature and hiking options, however, are beautiful and worth exploring.

What to See in Guguan Province
Hot Springs
Guguan is famous for its natural hot springs. The mineral-rich waters offer perfect relaxation and can be enjoyed at various public baths and resorts. In my opinion, the best private hot spring onsen is at the Hoshinoya resort. It is quiet, with almost no people, and surrounded by lush, jungle-like plants / to use it you have to be a hotel’s guest.
Nature Views and Rivers
The Dajia River runs through the region, providing picturesque river views and peaceful spots for picnicking or photography.
